Pre-Lighting the Wedding Candles?
by producer timothy scott

If you’ve not heard of pre-lighting the candles that you use for your wedding ceremony, this short article is for you.  Four out of five dentists surveyed recommend…alright, WE recommend simply lighting the candles and blowing them out before the ceremony…because they WILL NOT light quickly when you want them to…especially when there are 45 candles for two mothers to put flame upon, in front of hundreds of “Oh, here we go again” wedding guests, most of whom are present only to see the beautiful bride in her best bridal gown.

I shot one wedding where the young woman assigned to light the candelabra actually yawned several times while lighting.  I kid you not. I could show you the video!  And then there are the Funniest Home Videos of the “keepers of the flame” as they set their hair ends on fire…talk about a wedding to remember…and not for the dress.

There are no known religious reasons for NOT pre-lighting candles in advance, and the blackened wicks are barely perceivable unless your guests are right up close.  And who cares, anyway?  There, I wrote it.

I base this pre-fire advice partly on my own wedding experience. Our unity candles wouldn’t light during the outdoor ceremony.  The best man and I went through twelve, maybe fifteen matches, and two or three minutes, which equals a lifetime. Shoot, the sun was hot enough to melt our retinas and there wasn’t even a hint of wind.  So happy that we men were assigned black tuxedos.  Duh!

“Oh, are you crying, Honey?”

“No, it’s just sweat!!!”  Right.

We still united, ‘cuz nothin’, including 16 pounds of heat related weight loss or one little flippin’ candle was going to stop that, but how nice it would have been to add a successful lighting to our perfect, sun filled day.  Can you see my smile?

So why not make it easy on everybody?  Blacken your wicks, save some time and get right from the candle lighting phenomenon to the beautiful bride.  She’s what matters.
